Crossrail - C512 Whitechapel Station

Crossrail - C512 Whitechapel Station

This project saw the Balfour Beatty, Morgan Sindall and VINCI Construction (BBMV) team deliver a new station for the Elizabeth line in the heart of East London. The existing station at Whitechapel formed a busy interchange between the Hammersmith & City and District lines and London Overground.

Early works started with the construction of two 30-metre-deep shafts. One provides main access for passengers to the Elizabeth line tunnels, and the other is essentially a service shaft.

A new ‘interim’ station was then constructed allowing for demolition of the existing ticket hall. 2,800 tonnes of structural steel was installed above the London Overground and Hammersmith & City and District lines to support a new concourse linking a new ticket hall to the main shaft taking passengers down to the Elizabeth line platforms.

The completed station was opened to the public in August 2021. The station is acknowledged as one of the most complex and challenging stations on the Crossrail project. Passengers now access the new station through the sensitively restored original entrance on Whitechapel High Street, opened in 1876. The new station has nine lifts and three escalators and, for the first time, provides step-free access to improve accessibility for those visiting the renowned Royal London Hospital and the surrounding area.

All of this work was accomplished without disruption to the existing interchange which remained fully functional.
