M4 Junctions 3-12 Motorway Upgrade

The M4 is the main strategic route between London, the West of England and Wales. It connects people, communities and businesses, carrying on average 130,000 vehicles per day and is prone to congestion.

Taylor Woodrow is working in joint venture with VINCI Construction Grands Projets and Balfour Beatty on behalf of National Highways to upgrade the Motorway between junction 3 at Hayes and Junction 12 at Theale.

The project aims to reduce congestion, smooth the flow of traffic and make journeys more reliable, with works including:

  • 11 new overbridges
  • 131 new gantries
  • 108 variable message signs to update drivers
  • 421km of new lower-noise surfacing on all running lanes

2020 was a big year for the Balfour Beatty VINCI joint venture, with regular weekend closures required to facilitate the demolition and rebuilding of 11 overbridges and the extension of the motorway bridge over the River Thames. Click on the project’s ‘A Year of Bridges’ film at the top of the page for a summary of this fantastic achievement.

During 2021, the Balfour Beatty VINCI joint venture began reducing the length of the 51km scheme as sections of the motorway were completed. Junctions 8/9 to 12 was completed in December 2021, the traffic management has now been removed, and speeds increased to up to 70mph. Work is continuing from junction 3 to 8/9 to complete the project.

The work is being carried out in a collaborative alliance approach between client, contractor and supply chain; with digital transformation at the heart of the project’s success.
