TRAINWASH DELIVERY
2 MONTHS EARLY AT NORWICH
Design and build of a series of extensions, upgrades and refurbishments to existing depot facilities for client Greater Anglia.
These upgrades are the latest in a series of works to improve maintenance facilities for rail operators and help them to keep up with demand.
Works have been successfully completed at Norwich Crown Point Depot and are now in progress at Colchester and Southend, with Clacton to follow.
Works at Norwich involved converting and extending existing facilities to provide servicing, maintenance and stabling for a new fleet of trains. Colchester, Southend and Clacton include the installation of new equipment, provision of a new plant room, new walkways with associated lighting and supply of a sanding shed including an extraction system.
All works are being undertaken in live depot environments so must be carried out with minimal impact, safely and on time.
Key Features
- Provision of new sidings and a Bogie Drop Pit at Norwich
- Modifying track, Overhead Line Equipment (OLE) and signalling at Norwich
- Installation of new equipment
- Provision of new plant rooms and walkways

Self-delivery
We have enhanced our self-delivery capabilities throughout this project with elements such as the new carriagewash at Norwich.
This new facility was brought into use a staggering two months ahead of schedule through a combination of work with specialist subcontractors and self-delivery of demolition and excavation, fixing of rebar and multiple concrete pours. All delivered safely adjacent to the main line to Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth.

Collaboration
Collaboration has been at the heart of the project’s success in a live depot environment. One example of this is the £8.7M bogie drop facility at Norwich, which allows engineers to repair, remove and replace the underneath of train carriages. Working in partnership with the Greater Anglia Project Delivery Team, depot staff and Stadler we successfully brought this excellent new facility into service on time and budget working with the Greater Anglia team to limit the impact on depot operations.

Respecting the environment
Even in such limited settings, the team has found ways to protect and enhance the environment whilst constructing the improvements. This includes biodiversity enhancements through the provision of bug hotels, and undertaking litter picks around projects, wider rail depots and public roads leading to them.
