Design Manager (Rail)

Job Role:

Taylor Woodrow is recruiting for a Design Manager to work on our framework with Network Rail delivering the Western geotechnical and off-track drainage work as part of the Wales and Western regionís £2bn programme of works over the next eight years.

Reporting to Contractorís Engineering Manager (CEM), the Design Manager will be responsible for leading and overseeing Contractorís permanent works design resources and activities.



        Manage permanent works design subcontract packages to achieve delivery of cost-effective and compliant Contractorís design within agreed timescales and fee budgets.

        Implement design management procedures so as to comply with ISO 9001 design requirements and Client requirements for management of contractorís design specified in the Contract.

        Lead projectís implementation of Value Engineering, Design for Health and Safety BIM.

        Apply the principles of the Taylor Woodrow Design Management Best Practice Guide to foster a collaborative relationship between design and production teams.

        Challenge Work-in-Progress design and facilitate development of design that eliminates or mitigates construction health and safety risk: engage production team (TW and supply chain) in design reviews to this end.

        Lead administration of design sub-contract;

        Lead administration of main contract with regard to Contractorís design (raise Early Warnings, Compensation Event notifications etc.)

        Monitor cost and schedule performance of sub-contracted designers using EPPR proforma from Design Managerís Toolkit (or project-specific EVM based pro-forma).

        Review subcontracted designersí applications for payment and authorize as appropriate. 

        Participate in development of project BIM strategy oversee implementation of BIM Execution Plan with the support of Taylor Woodrow and Design Consultantís BIM specialists



Person Specification

        Civil engineering background, experience of Earthworks and heavy civils is preferred

        Understanding of Rail environment and general constraints on design, eg access, proximity to railway and clearances, Overhead line and signalling constraints

        Understand what BIM is, understand the implications and value proposition of BIM within your organisation.

        Ability to work within ProjectWise or equivalent CDE to manage design works
